Yueyaquan is a crescent-shaped lake in an oasis, south of the city of Dunhuang in Gansu Province, China. The depth of the lake, a popular tourist spot, had decreased over the years as sand encroached on the site but in 2006, the government started to fill the lake and restore its depth. (Source)
On this day in music history: January 15, 1977 - “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week, also peaking at #43 on the R&B singles chart on February 12, 1977. Written by Vini Poncia and Leo Sayer, it is the first chart topping single for the British singer/songwriter born Gerard Hugh Sayer. Having made his breakthrough as a recording artist in the US in May of 1975 with the single “Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)” (#9 Pop), Leo Sayer works with veteran producer Richard Perry (Nilsson, Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand, The Pointer Sisters) on his next album. Recording at Studio 55 in Hollywood, CA, “Dancing” features a number of veteran studio musicians such as Steve Gadd, Ray Parker, Jr., Larry Carlton, and Chuck Rainey playing on the track. Issued as the first single from Sayer’s fourth album “Endess Flight”, it quickly becomes a smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #68 on October 23, 1976, it climbs to the top of the chart twelve weeks later. The song wins Sayer and Poncia a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1978. Years later, it is revealed that guitarist Ray Parker, Jr. actually wrote the songs’ main chord progression and guitar riff during the cutting of the basic track, but does not receive a writing credit when it is released. Upset at this, Parker remains quiet about the situation, fearing at the time that he will be blackballed from his lucrative career as a session musician if he goes public. Ironically, several years later in 1985, Ray Parker, Jr. is in competition at the Grammy Awards with producer Richard Perry in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Parker’s “Ghostbusters” wins over Perry who is nominated for arranging The Pointer Sisters’ “Jump (For My Love)”. “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
On this day in music history: January 14, 1989 - “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week, also topping the R&B singles chart for 2 weeks on October 15, 1988. Written by Teddy Riley, Bobby Brown and Gene Griffin, it is the biggest hit for the former New Edition singer. After leaving his former group New Edition in 1985, Bobby Brown embarks on a solo career. Though his first album “King Of Stage” (released in 1986) yields a number one R&B single with the song “Girlfriend”, it does not produce any further hits and the album itself is only a modest seller. Determined to do better the next time out, Brown works with a team of songwriters and producers that includes L.A., Babyface, and Darryl Simmons, and Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin. Leader of the R&B band Guy, Riley pioneers the genre known as “new jack swing” on his work with singer Keith Sweat, and on Guy’s 1988 debut album which both help change the face of R&B music. “My Prerogative” is written in Teddy Riley’s home studio while working on material for Bobby Brown’s second album. The highly personal song directly confronts the rumors about Brown’s departure from New Edition and hard partying life style. Gene Griffin, Riley’s manager though he is credited with co-writing and producing “Prerogative”, he actually has very little to do with its creation. And though he does not receive a writing credit, Guy lead singer Aaron Hall also makes contributions to the song though does not receive a co-writing credit. Issued as the second single from “Don’t Be Cruel” in July of 1988, it is an immediate hit on R&B radio, topping the charts in mid October of 1988. After hitting number one on the R&B chart, MCA works at crossing the song over to pop radio just as the title track is peaking on the pop singles chart. Entering the Hot 100 at #78 on October 22, 1988, it climbs to the top of the chart twelve weeks later. “My Prerogative” becomes one of Bobby Brown’s signature songs, and is nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1989. Pop singer Britney Spears records a cover of the song for her first greatest hits album in 2004. “My Prerogative” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
